Notes From Our Visit

Our experience in China has been incredible with an extremely full itinerary. The Chinese people are extremely warm and loving everywhere we go. They treat us as celebrities as they are so curious and interested in America and our culture. We are often stopped and asked to pose for pictures with people.

The "Welcoming Ceremony" at the Middle School in was quite a monumental event. Just over two thousand students from one grade level gathered outside in the meeting area as the national anthem of the United States and China were played. Television and newspaper reporters were taking pictures and documenting our visit. The Chinese faculty and students at the school are so interested in learning everything they can from us and we have much to learn from them as well.

Music fills the school. Students sing usually in English to transition between classes. The Chinese students love to sing and perform and are quite good. Student have a good amount of freedom within the controlled environment, and appear to take responsibility to utilize that well. For example, during the hour lunch time, they can walk home, cross the street to visit a market, or remain on campus as they chose.

We observed an English class lesson on cause and effect, a Math lesson on infinity/sets/elements/one to one correspondence, and a Physics class where students were working with resistance, as well as a Music class and PE class. In each class, students were fully attentive and engaged. Many of the teachers readily use technology in the form of Power Points in their instructional method.

We have also participated in many discussions with the Administrators and Faculty about the things we can learn from each other - that will be another blog entry later as I need more time for analysis.

Today is our last day - we will be touring the Volkswagon Factory and the Primary School affiliated with this manufacturer and experiencing authentic Chinese shopping!

Hello from Highland

Hello Mrs. Mirand and Mr. Rabey,

All is well and quiet on the home front. The weather here is pleasant. What is the weather like in China? Hope all is going well with your visit. How did you do with teaching your lesson? I hope you are taking pictures.

Your secretary, Susan Huber

Hi Sue!

Thanks for the message! Weather was hot & humid in Beijing - about 70's, and cold in Changchun about 30-40.
The lesson went well. There was an article about it in the local newspaper!
See you Monday - all is going very well here.

Preparing To Teach a Lesson In China

I have been working on preparing an hour and a half lesson to teach to about 50 middle school students and 10-15 of their teachers.
Many of my present and former esteemed teaching colleagues have readily & graciously assisted in offering their ideas, activities and advice to assist me in providing the most meaningful learning experience for my new Chinese friends! I'm extremely grateful - thank you!

Not being sure about technology availability, resources, the physical lay out of the room, I've tried to anticipate & be ready for everything and anything!
The hour and a half lesson planned will provide a differentiated instruction/multiple intelligence approach.
The philosophy will be explained with a YouTube clip, a sampling of lesson activities to address the different intelligences are planned & ready to travel!

  • Students will listen to Whitney Houston's version of "America The Beautiful", writing down unfamiliar words & drawing a picture of what they visualize from the song. After sharing an imovie depicting scenes of America will be viewed
  • Conduct a science experiment - "How many drops of water can a penny hold?" - talk about the significance of the penny, superstition & keep the penny as a souvenir!
  • Together we will read & analyze a picture book story "Mr. Peabody's Apples" written by a popular American icon in China, Madonna, with a menu of cooperative group activities to select from - each activity will address a different intelligence/learning style.
  • The Chinese students & teachers will then have the opportunity to take a multiple intelligence survey to assess their own learning styles.
  • Make a connection between the multiple intelligences and 21st century teaching & learning - technology - and of course, I have plenty of imovies & slideshows of Lake Shore Highland students engaged!

Trying to pack it all tonight will be a bigger challenge than teaching the lesson!

Getting Ready To Travel

We are three days away from leaving for our trip to China. Three days will be spent in Beijing, then we will fly north to the Jilin Province where we will spend three days in Changchun. In Changchun much time will be spent at the School Affiliated With Jilin University. Jeff Rabey, Superintendent, will present on the relationship between American culture & American schools. I will model "American" teaching and provide sample lessons to a group of students.
